West Village Speech Therapy is a home-based private practice. Therapy sessions take place in a location convenient for you such as your home, your child’s school, or online.
Session length and frequency is determined based on the age and needs of your child. Sessions are typically 30 , 45 or 60 minutes long and occur 1-2 times per week.
We take a play-based approach to speech therapy which means speech and language therapy goals are targeted through play! Many games, toys and crafts can be adapted to target speech and language therapy goals. Sessions are structured yet flexible. One session might take place at a table using a mirror to practice a new sound (e.g., /L/) while the next session might be spent on a scavenger hunt looking for /L/ words around the house.
If your child is not willing to sit for a session, therapy goals may be targeted during child-led play. Therapy sessions are adaptable to your child’s needs.
Duration of services depend on the need of your child. Some children are able to “graduate” from speech therapy after a few months while other children continue to benefit from speech and language therapy services for a number of years.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is any tool used to communicate.
AAC may be beneficial to a child with who is non-verbal (not yet speaking) or a child who is frequently not understood by family and peers. It can be used to support speech and language development in children.
There are high-tech and low-tech AAC devices. High-tech devices include speech-generating devices such as tablets or i-pads with applications like Proloquo2Go, TouchChat, or LAMP Words for Life. Low-tech devices include a communication board with pictures or an alphabet board.
Speech is the sound of what is being said, the way sounds are produced, and the quality of the sound (e.g., ability to produce /s/ clearly when speaking). Language is what the speaker is saying and what the speaker understands. It includes word choice, word order, and the formation of stories.
A language difference is an expected “error” a child who is exposed to multiple languages may produce. For example, a Spanish-English speaking child might mix up the word order (e.g., say “house red” instead of “red house”). This is an expected error based on the grammar rules in Spanish. This type of error is considered a language difference and would not warrant the need for speech and language therapy.
A language disorder is an unexpected error that occurs in both languages. For example. a 6-year-old child who has been exposed to both English and Mandarin that is speaking only in 2-3 word phrases in both languages, rather than long sentences and stories expected of a 6-year-old likely has a language disorder because the language difficulty is occurring in both languages. This child would likely benefit from speech and language therapy services.
At West Village Speech Therapy we take the time to understand your family’s culture and language influences in order to provide appropriate speech and language evaluations and therapy services.
